How to Write Headlines That Make People Stop Scrolling

Ever scrolled past a headline and thought, Nah, I’ll pass? Happens all the time. But what if your headline is the one people scroll past? Not so fun, right? Let’s fix that.

Here’s how to make your headlines a magnet for attention.

  1. Get Straight To The Point

Nobody’s got time for vague headlines. People want to know what they’re in for, so give it to them straight.

Try something like, “Boost Your Sales with These 5 Tricks.”

See? Now they know exactly what they’re getting.

By being direct, you save people from guessing. You’re cutting the fluff, getting right to the point, and…most importantly - not wasting anyone’s time.

  1. Numbers Are Your Friend

5 Ways to Close a Sale Faster” is way more tempting than “Tips for Faster Sales.”

Numbers make headlines feel more tangible, like a quick roadmap for readers to follow.

People love lists because they’re bite sized and digestible. Numbers say, “This will be quick and worth it”

Bonus: numbered headlines are like little mental checklists. Easy to read, easy to remember.

  1. Make It Personal

Headlines with a “you” feel like a buddy talking directly to you.

Compare “How to Write Killer Headlines” with “How You Can Write Killer Headlines”

The 2nd one speaks directly to the reader, and not at them. Big difference.

When you make your headline about “you,” readers feel like they’re part of the conversation. It’s friendly, like you’re talking to them instead of selling to them.

  1. Use Words That Pop

Some words just have power. You know, like “secret,” “proven,” or “instant.”

They add a little something extra to your headline. Wouldn’t you rather click “The Secret to Better Writing” over “Writing Tips”?

These power words hit emotions. They imply there’s something valuable inside, something just for them. It’s like finding a treasure map instead of a brochure.

So use them to your advantage!

  1. Create Urgency

Nobody wants to miss out on things. Throw in a little urgency, and you’ll grab more attention.

Think: “Last Minute Tips for Better Ads” or “Why You Need This Headline Hack Right Now”

It’s like saying, “You need this, now”

Urgency triggers FOMO - the Fear of Missing Out. And when people feel like they’re about to miss something good, they’re more likely to read on.

  1. Make A Promise You Can Keep

Your headline is a promise to the reader. If you say, “The Secret to Getting More Clients”, your content has to deliver that secret.

You have to give them what you say you will.

People hate feeling tricked. When you make a clear promise in your headline and follow through, it builds trust and keeps people coming back.

And trust me, your readers will thank you for being straight up.

Stop Blending In

If you want people to read your stuff, make sure your headlines do more than just sit there looking pretty.

They need to stand out, grab attention, and pull the readers in.
